A Passion of Mine

Some of you may know that I organize a
meal for our local homeless shelter once
a month. I had one of those “Sure, I’ll
do it, because I think I can make a difference”
moments. My pastor is a very special man
and anything I can do to lighten his load I
give it a try. There are several people from
our church that help out, but for the most
part it’s on my shoulders. Another girl and
I set out to put together a pizza party for
the crew this Thursday. We began by calling
area pizza places and we were met with
opposition at first. We stopped for a moment
and prayed….then started calling again. In
less then 15 minutes we had 6 different pizza
shops donate nearly 20 pizzas!

It’s interesting sitting down and eating with
these people and it’s hard for me to understand
why some people are “uncomfortable” going
with me to the shelter. I don’t preach to them,
I visit with them, I listen to them. We swap
kitchen tips, we wash dishes together, we smile,
and we hug. If I don’t get at least three or four
guests at the shelter to smile….I stay longer than
initially planned.

We live in a relatively low crime area and a couple
months ago I forgot to lock my car upon arriving
at the shelter. I had nearly 80 bucks worth of
stuff ripped off, including a Taylor disk. I was
mad at myself for my oversight. I contacted the
residential manager and he looked around for
my stuff without any positive results. As my
finances allowed I was able to replace everything
except for the disk but I couldn’t help but think
about the destitution that drove this person to
rip me off. I hope that they have some wonderful
music playing through my equipment and that
they are getting enjoyment from it.

I look forward to this Thursday. When I presented
my plans for the shelter meal in front of the
church this morning, I ended with “Pizza party
at the shelter 6pm this Thursday, see ya there!”

I wonder how many from my church will take me up on it.
I’m reminded of the Ford commercials…BE BOLD!!!

I recently received this message and thought
“WOW” what a fitting description.

Gateways
=========

I had just finished preaching a eulogy.

The thought of the many marriages and
funerals that I’ve attendedrecently went
through my mind.

I thought, “Marriage and death are both
gateways to a new world.

They can BOTH lead to either heaven or hell.”

The tragedy of life and of the world is not
that men do not know God; the tragedy is that,
knowing Him, they still insist on going their own way.

Volunteering is one of the more rewarding things I've ever done in my life. I used to coach youth basketball for 10-12 year olds. They do inspire.

It's the little things, whether volunteering at the Chicklet's school, or helping her go through her old clothes and toys for goodwill that make a difference.

Last year, we received some gift certificates to a local grocery store for Christmas from work. We used them to purchase Christmas meals (turkey, stuffing, dessert, veggies, etc). The Chicklet was so proud that we had managed to come up with 2 baskets.. this Christmas she wants to do 4.. I love that little one..
    Teach them young...

I agree with Anndi - teach them young. Brennan and I work at one of the local soup kitchens, we volunteer at the SPCA and we are very involved with fundraisers at our church. Giving back to the community is very important. We have so much, and there are people who do without the basic necessities every single day. It sure puts things into perspective.
